T-Mining Works to Use Blockchain in Port of Rotterdam

In the Netherlands, blockchain is being applied to improve the quality of processes and services in ports. Particularly, the Port of Rotterdam is deploying a blockchain-based solution to ensure the safety and efficiency in handling containers.

The Secure Container Release application which was developed by Belgian startup T-Mining and was first used in the Port of Antwerp, Belgium.

This new application of blockchain was created to provide an new way to monitor containers via PIN codes, as the present system is vulnerable to fraud and forms of corruption.

At the moment – PIN code handling still requires a lot of manual work which slows down the whole process of freight expediting – and it also leads to mistakes that cause trouble to anyone involved in the transaction.

Blockchain is Taking Over Shipping

Technological shortcomings create opportunities for illegal goods to sneak in and out of a country via sea freight. A recent report from an European drug monitoring authority showed a drastic rise in drug smuggling in containers and carried through large ports.

Nico Wauters, T-Mining’s CEO, blamed the PIN code technology for still relying too much on human work. Thereby, bureaucracy and bribery are inevitable, and professional criminals are able to bribe their way to PINs – which makes the whole system fall apart.

To solve this issue, T-Mining’s Secure Container Release application uses a digital token to trace back to the origin of an identical container. People cannot leak the tokens outside because they can’t be copied.

Tighter Security

This technology helps prevent corruption in the security of the port – and it will likely speed up the processing at each stage of the shipment.

Every year the Port of Rotterdam is a transit station for thousands of ships. As the result of this volume, millions of containers are unloaded then piled up again on another ships.

The cycle of picking up containers – storing – and loading requires a number of players in the chain to work together, making it much complicated for coordination.

With the utilization of blockchain technology, it is expected to bring more efficiency and productivity in handling containers in specific and in the general operation of ports.
