Many Brave Browser Users Aren't Leveraging its Crypto Features

Brave Browser is enjoying a wide user base, with over 13 million monthly users. Despite this, there are a few users who aren't taking advantage of its cryptocurrency features.

Changpeng Zhao, the CEO of major crypto exchange Binance, and Brendan Eich, the CEO, and co-founder of Brave had a Twitter live stream on May 5. Though Eich said that there are 13.8 million monthly active users on the Brave crypto-enabled web browser, he also stated that most of them do not actually use its cryptocurrency features.

According to Eich, the number of users who joined the crypto-based Brave Rewards system and activated their wallets over the last 30 days is 1.7 million, or about 12.32% of the total users.

Brave Browser Blocks Advertising and Tracking

The CEO of Brave explained how the system works from the advertiser’s perspective. When a user browses the internet, web activity is measured and tracked, then all of the data is used to target advertisements to that individual.

Eich explained:

"People in advertising, working for the brands who make the products, goods, and services we buy, will spend a lot of money to try to get you to buy their goods. And so they throw money into this digital ad system, and some of it causes you to see an ad or tracks you so they can decide what ad to show you, but at the end of the day you don’t get any of that money, all you get is the ads and the tracking.”

According to Eich, Brave browser blocks traditional advertising and tracking. Instead of using that data, it allows the user to choose to participate in a “clean” ad and donation model which is private by default.

The browser's Basic Attention Token or BAT, which is a unit of account, pays the user for their attention and is used to support content creators and award users who view ads. This is a far better system, as web users are paid directly for their time, and the big web companies are cut out of the picture.

Growing a Better Online Economy

Eich said that the firm is working to allow users who are new to cryptocurrencies to enter the economy. It is giving them free tokens in exchange for their activity in the Brave Rewards program.

Much like Patreon, this allows users to participate in the system and earn tokens that they can automatically donate to creators or set up monthly contributions.

Eich added:

“When we first released on desktop, it was 40% of the desktop browser share and as we added mobile we found people were less willing to use it, but we are working to make it more attractive to use by making it more convenient, making it reward the user more.”

Binance has recently partnered with Brave to integrate the exchange with the desktop version of the browser. The Brave Browser desktop version, with a Binance widget, allows users to trade on the exchange without leaving the browser!
