Yesterday this author interviewed Wanchain’s Director of Marketing Temujin Louie, who discussed everything that their project has been up to when it comes to development, partnerships, and pushing the entire space forward with interoperability. Louie explained to the Bitsquad how Wanchain’s atomic chain swaps work and how Wanchain’s Storeman Group nodes function on the network. In addition, Louie announced that Wanchain has partnered with Bitboy Crypto to run a node for the Bitsquad to delegate its $WAN. More information on the node and detailed instructions on how you can delegate will be forthcoming in the near future.

Super stoked to have you today to discuss about Wanchain. Based off my research you guys are the furthest ahead in the entire space when it comes to interoperability and chain to chain swaps.

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 13:07]
Thanks! I agree πŸ˜‰

The Cat 🐱 Head Admin Of BitboyCrypto Check The @, [22.07.21 13:07]
Please tell our audience who may not know a bit about the project and its history?

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 13:07]
Sure thing

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 13:08]
Wanchain is one of the older projects out there, and we’ve been working on the issue of cross-chain blockchain interoperability for many years

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 13:10]
As I’m sure you all know, most blockchains are siloed, self-contained and isolated as soon as their genesis block is built. Crypto assets on blockchains can’t flow freely from one blockchain to another. Block commands and operations are confined to one blockchain and cannot be executed on other blockchains. This isolation of blockchains hinders the technology as a whole and limits its usefulness across various industries.

The Cat 🐱 Head Admin Of BitboyCrypto Check The @, [22.07.21 13:10]
[In reply to Temujin Louie]
ONLY focused on that aspect as well, which is important. Instead of trying to do multiple different things you pioneered this and you aren’t alone the Blockchain Interoperability alliance consist of Wanchain, Aion and Iota correct? Is that still an active alliance?

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 13:11]
[In reply to The Cat 🐱 Head Admin Of BitboyCrypto Check The @]
Haha you’ve done your research! The scope of that alliance has certainly shifted, but recently discussions with some of the members has picked up.

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 13:12]
But back to Wanchain, as you said, we’ve been focused on interoperability from the start. Our mission is to connect all of the world’s isolated, siloed blockchains. Our vision is that all the blockchains β€” past, present and future β€” be connected and interoperable.

The Cat 🐱 Head Admin Of BitboyCrypto Check The @, [22.07.21 13:14]
[In reply to Temujin Louie]
With that said the infamously known blockchain trilemma which consists of making a blockchain, decentralized, scalable and secure. Should actually now include interoperability as well, which also comes into question with solutions like Cosmos which are only allowing interoperability to IBC chains or Inter-Blockchain Communication Protocol.

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 13:15]
[In reply to The Cat 🐱 Head Admin Of BitboyCrypto Check The @]
All I can say now is that we need to stop thinking about interoperability only in terms of connecting public chains πŸ˜‰

The Cat 🐱 Head Admin Of BitboyCrypto Check The @, [22.07.21 13:15]
[In reply to Temujin Louie]
Does the membership include more than just the three listed above?

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 13:17]
[In reply to The Cat 🐱 Head Admin Of BitboyCrypto Check The @]
I don’t want to paint the wrong picture about this old alliance by talking about members. Some of the original projects are no longer active, and new ones have joined. But the point is that many interoperability projects are going to play a role in connecting the world’s countless siloed blockchains.

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 13:18]
[In reply to The Cat 🐱 Head Admin Of BitboyCrypto Check The @]

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 13:20]
[In reply to The Cat 🐱 Head Admin Of BitboyCrypto Check The @]
Sure. Wanchain’s cross-chain architecture already connects 7 completely heterogeneous networks:

-Bitcoin
-Ethereum
-Litecoin
-EOSIO
-Wanchain
-Binance Smart Chain
-XRP Ledger

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 13:20]
We’ve also got a bunch more coming β€” Polkadot should be next

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 13:20]
Besides these major chains, we also, naturally, support a huge number of other digital assets like USDT, UNI, LINK, SUSHI… just to name a few

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 13:21]
Let me give you a quick overview about how these decentralised bridges work

The Cat 🐱 Head Admin Of BitboyCrypto Check The @, [22.07.21 13:21]
[In reply to Temujin Louie]
How does all this work for the audience, and what are Wanchain’s Storeman nodes?

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 13:22]
Wanchain has two types of nodes: PoS validator Nodes and Storeman Nodes.

Our PoS Validator Nodes secure the Wanchain network itself using a proprietary PoS consensus algorithm called Galaxy Consensus. Wanchain’s decentralised cross-chain technology, however, is powered by a group of special nodes called the Storeman Group.

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 13:22]
These are the Storeman nodes you mentioned

[In reply to Temujin Louie]
No need I sent you your message in DM

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 13:26]
The way Wanchain’s decentralised cross-chain bridges work is:

1) When you initiate a cross-chain transaction, all the nodes in the Storeman Group work together to lock the original asset on the origin chain

2) After the original asset is locked, the Storeman Group mints a new token on the destination chain

So if you’re moving XRP from XRP Ledger to Ethereum, the Storeman Group first locks your XRP on XRP Ledger, then mints new XRP on Ethereum.

3) When you want your original tokens back, the Storeman Group burns the minted tokens on the destination chain and then unlocks the original tokens on the origin chain.

So in our XRP example, the Storeman Group will burn the XRP on Ethereum first, the unlock your XRP on XRP Ledger

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 13:27]
[In reply to The Cat 🐱 Head Admin Of BitboyCrypto Check The @]
thanks

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 13:27]
[In reply to Temujin Louie]
This is all pretty straightforward stuff, but where Wanchain’s magic comes in β€” and what sets us apart from other cross-chain projects β€” is that this whole process is 100% decentralised and permissionless

The Cat 🐱 Head Admin Of BitboyCrypto Check The @, [22.07.21 13:27]
Apologies bots are here to keep spammers/scammers away. But sometimes they go haywire and remove text. I have many bots in here, the one that messed with you was Watchdog_robot

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 13:28]
At any given point, there are 25 nodes in the Storeman Group. The Storeman Group is re-selected every month and the number of nodes included in the Storeman Group can be adjusted as the network scales.

At no point in the process does any Storeman node in the Storeman Group ever have access to your original asset. When the Storeman Group locks your XRP on XRP Ledger, no single node has access to the private keys controlling this locked account. Because Wanchain uses multiparty computation and threshold secret sharing, each Storeman node only ever has access to a small fragment of the key.

This is what allows Wanchain to build and operate 100% decentralised cross-chain bridges

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 13:28]
[In reply to The Cat 🐱 Head Admin Of BitboyCrypto Check The @]

The Cat 🐱 Head Admin Of BitboyCrypto Check The @, [22.07.21 13:29]

The Cat 🐱 Head Admin Of BitboyCrypto Check The @, [22.07.21 13:30]
[In reply to Temujin Louie]
Which is pretty cool to be honest.

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 13:31]
But I’ll do my best to give you the simple explanation

The Cat 🐱 Head Admin Of BitboyCrypto Check The @, [22.07.21 13:32]
So you mentioned that Wanchain is different from other projects focused on interoperability, can you tell me in what ways?

The Cat 🐱 Head Admin Of BitboyCrypto Check The @, [22.07.21 13:34]
[In reply to Temujin Louie]
Sounds good I am sure our audience would appreciate that.

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 13:36]
Wanchain uses a process known as Publicly Verifiable Secret Sharing. Basically, each Storeman node only ever has a small fraction of the information needed to sign transaction. The Storeman nodes then use a well-known scheme called Shamir’s Secret Sharing to securely share their piece of data with the other nodes. Using a bit of cryptographic wizardry, the bits of info are recompiled and the transaction can be signed.

To put it in even simpler terms, the 25 Storeman nodes work together to sign transactions, without ever knowing what it is they are working on, nor who the other Storeman nodes are.

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 13:36]
I’d encourage you all to check out the more detailed write-up… it will make a lot more sense that way! haha

Ok, let me tell you a bit about what differentiates Wanchain

The Cat 🐱 Head Admin Of BitboyCrypto Check The @, [22.07.21 13:37]
Sure thing let me look through what you just said.

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 13:38]
Under the hood, Wanchain differs greatly from other cross-chain solutions. That being said, I firmly believe that many cross-chain projects have a role to play in connecting the world’s siloed blockchain networks. The idea of a singular interoperability project is counter to the very philosophies of interoperability and, in my view, blockchain as a whole.

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 13:39]
Right now, the 2-3 legitimate decentralised blockchain interoperability projects are all doing different things, so there’s more than enough room. For example:

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 13:40]
Polkadot is focused on providing out-of-the-box interoperability for its own parachains.

Cosmos is focused on linking Tendermint chains using IBC.

Wanchain is focused on building decentralised bridges that connect heterogeneous chains.

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 13:40]
But to answer you question as simply as possible

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 13:40]
Wanchain is aiming to build far more “play-and-play” cross-chain bridges than competing projects

The Cat 🐱 Head Admin Of BitboyCrypto Check The @, [22.07.21 13:40]
[In reply to Temujin Louie]
Thanks for that really great explanation!

The Cat 🐱 Head Admin Of BitboyCrypto Check The @, [22.07.21 13:41]
[In reply to Temujin Louie]
No actually you did a good job explaining it

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 13:42]
In other words, unlock solutions ike Cosmos that requires a 3rd party to build on top of a Cosmos hub, or Polkadot that requires a 3rd party to build on the Substrate layer, Wanchain uses Secure Multi-Party Computing to lock an account with multiple parties so that atomic transactions can be achieved. Using this approach, Wanchain is able to bridge public blockchains such as Bitcoin and Ethereum.

While all of Wanchain’s decentralised bridges are custom built and implemented specifically for the networks they connect, common components and frameworks are emerging organically industry-wide so that future bridges will be blockchain agnostic and can serve as a plug and play solution to connect any blockchains that meet the interoperability specifications.

The Cat 🐱 Head Admin Of BitboyCrypto Check The @, [22.07.21 13:42]
So tell me about some of the applicable use cases for Wanchain besides allowing users to swap assets from chain to chain?

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 13:42]
Let me just point one more thing out

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 13:42]
Wanchain’s VP of Engineering, Dr. Weijia Zhang, is heavily involved in developing these blockchain interoperability standards. He is actually the Enterprise Ethereum Alliance Head of Asia and leads their interoperability workgroup.

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 13:43]
[In reply to The Cat 🐱 Head Admin Of BitboyCrypto Check The @]
Sure! There are several besides the decentralised cross-chain bridges that we build

The Cat 🐱 Head Admin Of BitboyCrypto Check The @, [22.07.21 13:44]
[In reply to Temujin Louie]
Very impressive!

The Cat 🐱 Head Admin Of BitboyCrypto Check The @, [22.07.21 13:44]
[In reply to Temujin Louie]
Thats a big key fact that separates Wanchain from other projects.

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 13:45]
In terms of community-built DAPPs, Wanchain has a full cross-chain DeFi ecosystem up and running. Pretty much at least one of everything you can imagine.

– WanSwap is a popular cross-chain DEX and AMM

– WanLend, which is about to upgrade to version 2, is a lending platform

– ZooKeeper is a really cool gamified NFT DAPP that allows users to earn additional rewards when providing liquidity on Wanswap

-InstantCross offers faster cross-chain transactions

-Phoenix offers options and other derivatives

-Jack’s Pot is a no-loss lottery

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 13:47]
And in terms of Enterprise use cases, China’s largest utility company is building a data management system using Wanchain’s blockchain technology, T-bridge framework and smart contracts.

There’s also some preliminary work being done on some other projects. But as I’m sure you can understand, we are pretty limited in what we can share about these right now

The Cat 🐱 Head Admin Of BitboyCrypto Check The @, [22.07.21 13:48]

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 13:50]
Ok, well, as I mentioned, Wanchain Storeman nodes are permissionless β€” this means anyone can run a Storeman node. Storeman nodes are also collaborative. Anyone can delegate their WAN tokens to someone else’s Storeman node to automatically earn rewards together.

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 13:50]
As such, I’m very excited to share the new that Wanchain and Ben (and The Cat) are teaming up to launch the BitBoy Storeman Node!

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 13:52]
The BitBoy Storeman Node will help perform and verify decentralised cross-chain transactions throughout Wanchains decentralised cross-chain architecture.

Once the Bitboy node becomes operational in early August, I encourage the entire Bitsquad to delegate a few WAN to the Bitboy node so you can all earn rewards together while helping to build the cross-chain DeFi world and help blockchain reach its full potential!!πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

So as we are nearing the end of our AMA and getting ready to open the floodgates I have just a few more questions for you.

The Cat 🐱 Head Admin Of BitboyCrypto Check The @, [22.07.21 13:55]
What are WAN token uses and benefits?

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 13:55]
Right! If you’re going to stake some WAN in the BitBoy Storeman node, it’d be good to know a bit more about the WAN token itself πŸ˜‰

The Cat 🐱 Head Admin Of BitboyCrypto Check The @, [22.07.21 13:56]
Absolutely!

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 13:56]
Simply, WAN is the Wanchain network’s native utility token. It primarily serves a few functions:

-Incentives for Wanchain’s PoS Validator nodes and Storeman nodes, including their delegators

-Gas fees

-Collateral for wrapped cross-chain tokens and assets

-Staking rewards

-Private transactions

-Powers Wanchain’s smart contracts

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 13:57]
Gas fees are nearly negligible though, just for the record πŸ˜‰

The Cat 🐱 Head Admin Of BitboyCrypto Check The @, [22.07.21 13:59]

The Cat 🐱 Head Admin Of BitboyCrypto Check The @, [22.07.21 14:00]
So low transaction fees + interoperability? I like it!

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 14:00]
and fast πŸ‘€

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 14:02]
Sure, as I mentioned, Storeman nodes handle Wanchain’s cross-chain transactions. But even though the Storeman Group setup is fully decentralised, Wanchain’s architects are extremely focused on security and redundancies (as they should be).

So Storeman nodes need to put down collateral, in WAN tokens, to be able to perform decentralised cross-chain transactions.

Temujin Louie, [22.07.21 14:02]
[In reply to The Cat 🐱 Head Admin Of BitboyCrypto Check The @]

Wanchain has just recently released our decentralised bridges connecting Litecoin to the world of cross-chain DeFi. We’re at the point now where our core architecture is built and running well. Now, we’re going to continue to build out the network β€” to connect more and more public chains ot the network.

We’ve got 2-4 new chain integrations that are well into development, including Polkadot. That being said, if any of you have any suggestions or requests, or are working for projects that have a specific need, you can let us and our admins know on Telegram.

Besides that, we are also working on several Enterprise use cases. Part of our long-term vision is to create a network where private and public chains can interact, so we’re making headway to that end. As I mentioned, Wanchain’s technology is currently being used by one of the world’s biggest utility companies. But that’s just one use case. There are several more in the works that we aren’t talking about publicly just yet.
